WRITING

Writers for Grey Matters Journal author articles about cutting edge neuroscience research from various lenses, including but not limiting to a psychological, biochemical, computational, and physiological perspective. While all articles in our journal will be brain sciences-based, neuroscience is a vastly interdisciplinary field. We encourage authors to write about any topic of their choice as long as they delve into the neuropsychological and/or neurophysiological processes that relate to their topic.

LAY REVIEW

The Lay Review team ensures article accessibility and clarity of thought, making sure a reader with no scientific background is able to understand the scientific concepts presented. Lay Reviewers work closely with Scientific Reviewers, seeking to communicate science most accessibly while keeping an emphasis on data and research. This role is designed for students who are passionate about making ideas accessible to all, and a strong humanities background is preferred.

GENERAL EDITING

The General Editing division helps authors strengthen and refine writing by providing feedback on grammar, word choice, article clarity and organization, and tone. General editors are passionate about all aspects, big and small, of the editing process and must have excellent communication skills. Workshopping materials are provided to guide editors in weekly edits.

SCIENTIFIC REVIEW

The Scientific Review division is responsible for maintaining the scientific integrity of articles. Scientific Editors will be responsible for ensuring that study interpretations and physiological processes are accurately represented, and can expect to work closely with authors during the initial weeks of the publication cycle as research aids. Scientific Editors must have strong communication skills, a passion for science, and a commitment to combating the spread of misinformation.

ART

Art is an important aspect of our interdisciplinary approach to science outreach! The role of the artist is critical in providing a visually appealing experience and communicating complex information in a way that is accessible to everyone. Each artist is paired with an author and will develop pieces 3-4 artistic pieces that complement written work, including a focus piece.

Artists’ work will be published both within digital and print publications, and will also be separately published within the “Art” platform of our site. Art may also be posted to social media to draw interest for the publication.

LAYOUT

The Layout Team works to assemble texts and images in a balanced and readable way. Members of the Layout Team participate in photo editing processes using Adobe Cloud applications. The Layout Team is responsible for formatting print publications and working with graphic designers to produce supplementary content. Layout members are passionate about design, organization, and producing a cohesive journal.

SOCIAL MEDIA

The Social Media team manages GreyMattersVC’s Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter accounts. Members are responsible for tracking post frequencies, producing and formatting content, and communicating announcements. creating positive online engagement and relaying key information and deadlines. The Social Media team works closely with artists and authors to showcase work produced by Grey Matters Journal VC. Members are familiar with social media and dedicated to ensuring positive online engagement.

OUTREACH

The Outreach Team plays a vital role in creating recruitment timelines and strategies, as well as working closely with the Social Media Team. Outreach will also consist of reaching out to the local Poughkeepsie community and applying for funding from outside organizations and grants. Members of the Outreach Team should be passionate about recruiting from various departments at Vassar and ensuring the distribution of art and articles to local communities and beyond.
